Bornova is located in the western part of Turkey in the Province of Izmi. It is one of the oldest local authorities of Turkey established in 1881. Bornova is highly urbanized and modern city that covers an area of 215 km². It is the third-largest district in Izmir Province, home to around 500.000 inhabitants in the Greater Metropolitan Area with more than 1 million mobile population) with corresponding high levels of development in terms of services and industry (5 big Industrial Zones are located in Bornova).
To be able to present cleaner, more healthy and livable areas in Bornova, all municipal activities contribute to decrease pollution and to reach contemporary and innovative waste management systems. The Sanitation Affairs department of the Municipality is the responsible body for the collection and transfer of household, packaging, construction and demolition, electric and electronic waste in 45 different neighborhoods of the city. The department has a capacity of 500 experienced employees and 70 types of vehicles to complete its mission. In 2017, the Sanitation Affairs department has managed 160.604 tonnes of household waste.
Bornova Municipality is taking an active part in EU projects with the aim to increase awareness about waste-related issues among municipal staff, citizens and other stakeholders. In collaboration with the other local authorities in the URBANREC project, Bornova is involved in the evaluation and assessment that will cover the whole chain (from prevention, collection, sorting, reuse, recycling towards final treatment) and in the awareness-raising and information activities on prevention and collection of bulky waste.
