[16/06/2017] - Project meeting and Ecofrag pilot plant
The last project meeting took place on 30 and 31 May 2017 in Valencia, Spain. The meeting included an exchange between partners on the activities performed in the last months, as well as a tour of Ecofrag pilot plant including a demonstration of the Ecofrag technology.

[16/06/2017] - A step forward for the recycling of mattresses
As part of the project activities, DELAX (ES) is investigating possibilities to incorporate post-consumer materials in the production of new mattresses, by retrieving mattresses from the Spanish public authority CVI. In parallel, Fraunhofer ICT is performing analysis and treatment of foam materials received from Ecofrag to obtain secondary polyols.

[16/06/2017] - New valorisation routes for mixed textiles
Belgian partners Centexbel and Procotex have worked with post-consumer textile samples both after the separation process with Ecofrag technology and coming from Vanheede and IMOG (BE). Further tests and investigations are ongoing.

[16/06/2017] - Improving the separation of mixed plastics
Mixed plastic waste from separation with Ecofrag technology and treated with the current state-of-the-art technology are being compared. Belgian partner Vanheede and IYTE in Turkey are involved in the ongoing analysis.

[16/06/2017] - In brief: further news from our partners’ activities
In the framework of the URBANREC project, DV’s Environment Deputy Josep Bort visited the facilities of the company Ecofrag in Agullent (Valencia). The visit took place on 6 March 2017 and showed how Ecofrag is developing last generation treatment plant to deal with bulky waste.

[16/06/2017] - Legal Working Group meeting on reuse – feedback welcome
The second meeting of the URBANREC Legal Working Group focused on the topic of reuse of bulky waste. Several presentations were held during the meeting and a number of relevant questions were addressed.

[16/06/2017] - Diputació de Valčncia
Diputación de Valencia (DV) – the Valencia provincial council, is a public administration that works as a big town hall for 266 municipalities in the province of Valencia. It pays special attention to the smallest municipalities which represent 75 % of the total municipalities in the province. DV supports the municipalities preserving inter-regional balance and helps municipalities to cooperate and collaborate in the execution of local competences, especially those which can not be easily implemented with their own resources, such as waste management.

[16/06/2017] - Ecofrag
ECOfragmentation Europe S.L.E. (ECOFRAG) is a recently established company. It aims to valorise and recycle different types of waste, and in particular post-industrial plastic waste (e.g. commodity plastic and other elastomers), through the application of an innovative technology owned by the company and based on high pressure water fragmentation.

[16/06/2017] - IMOG
Imog is one of the 26 intermunicipal organisations for waste management in Flanders and is located in South-West-Flanders. It takes care of the waste management of 11 municipalities representing 233.000 inhabitants and is responsible for the waste collection and waste treatment. For this purpose, Imog has 2 sites with their specific activities (such as a household waste incinerator, landfilling site, biomass centre and 2 sorting centres) and an extensive network of source-separated waste collection (including 16 civic amenity sites, 300 glass containers and door-to-door collection).

Ongoing activities

[01/12/2016] - Investigating new possibilities for the reuse of bulky waste in Flanders
The inter-municipal public organisation IMOG (BE) provides integrated waste management solutions to 14 municipalities in South West Flanders. For its tasks within URBANREC, IMOG works together with the Kringloopcentrum South West Flanders to enhance opportunities for bulky waste reuse.

[01/12/2016] - Provisional textile demonstrators by Centexbel, Procotex, Vanheede (BE) and IYTE (TR)
For the recovery of the textile fraction of bulky waste within the framework of the URBANREC project, three Belgian partners (Centexbel, Procotex and Vanheede Environment Group) work in close cooperation with the Turkish partner IYTE, a research university. At the moment three different demonstrators, which could be produced from the recovered textile fraction, are provisionally defined.

[01/12/2016] - URBANREC implementation in Turkey
Turkish partners İYTE (Izmir Institute of Technology) and Bornova municipality have been working together to collect data and organise the collection of bulky waste for reuse. Further, close collaboration is ongoing between İYTE and the Belgian partners Vanheede and Centexbel, related to the recovery of recycled wood and plastics from bulky waste for the formulation of WPC.

DV – the Valencia provincial council – organised a public seminar for municipalities to promote the project URBANREC as a new alternative in the bulky waste management, able to transform bulky waste into a resources.

Once approved by the Flemish Government, OVAM implements the legislation and supervises its implementation. Since 1981 OVAM strives for efficient and sustainable management of waste, materials and soil. The joint efforts of OVAM, citizens, the private sector and local governments have made Flanders a leading European region in this domain. In the future OVAM wants to continue and even boost these efforts in view of achieving a true circular economy in which a sustainable management of waste, materials and soil makes new resources, materials and space available.
