Mattresses demonstrator soon to be finalised

As part of the project activities, DELAX (ES) is investigating a mattresses demonstrator based on recycled materials, in collaboration with project partners FRAUNHOFER, RAMPF (DE), EUROSPUMA (PT), RESCOLL (FR) and AIMPLAS (ES).

The recycled polyols are obtained through acidolysis process from post-consumer mattresses materials. Since 2017 several lab trials are investigated and tested by EUROSPUMA for viscoelastic mattresses top layer and by RESCOLL for hot-melt PUR adhesives. The tested polyols show promising results in terms of mechanical properties like density, hardness, air flow, resilience, elongation and tensile strength for PU foam viscoelastic top layer and interesting properties such as good flexibility, green strength behaviour, relevant reactivity, and good adhesion for the hot-melt PUR adhesive. AIMPLAS and DELAX investigated a technology for the production of the rebonding foam core of the final demonstrator.

Currently pilot trials are running for production of recycled polyol for viscoelastic foam layer in tonnes scale and for hot-melt adhesives at RAMPF. In next steps industrial trials with the hot-melt PUR gun will be performed and production of viscoelastic foam layer at industrial scale is planned.

In November 2018, the finalisation of the mattresses demonstrator with a viscoelastic top layer with recycled polyol produced by EUROSPUMA (PT), rebonding foam for the core of the mattresses coming from DELAX (ES) together with the Hot-Melt PUR adhesives from RESCOLL (FR) shall be ready.
