Legal barriers to market uptake of recycled plastics
Industrial and research partners need to overcome not only technical challenges of recycling plastics coming out from bulky waste, but also economic and legal challenges. The latest meeting of the dedicated URBANREC Working Group looked into the topic of barriers to market uptake of recycled plastics and more specifically, how it can be facilitated through legislation.
One of the URBANREC project’s objectives is to propose a set of recommendations for specific legislation on bulky waste. For this purpose, ACR+ coordinates a Working Group on legal issues which gathers a range of relevant stakeholders and meets at regular intervals, discussing each time a specific topic related to the management of bulky waste and its integration into the EU legislative framework.
The latest (third) meeting of the Legal Working group took place on 18 April 2018 and addressed the hurdles faced by industrial stakeholders to introduce second-hand plastic materials on the market. Additional input from various stakeholders was collected via an online questionnaire.
The next meeting will be held at the end of 2018 with the planned participation of European Commission representatives. The recommendations produced within the Legal Working Group will be presented during the final project in Brussels at the end of 2019.
